4th Poom Junior Black Belt · Poomsae Competitor · Student Since Age 4
Isaac Lim started taekwondo at the age of four under Master Wayne Law, and has trained with him for over ten years since.
He earned his 1st Poom at seven and now holds 4th Poom, the highest poom grade a junior can reach. Few get there: it needs a minimum of three years at 3rd Poom on top of everything before it.
He competes in poomsae, with two National School Games medals and more from Singapore Taekwondo Federation-sanctioned championships.
He has also secured Direct School Admission to NUS High School of Mathematics and Science — though not through taekwondo.
He trains in our kids taekwondo classes alongside his younger brother, Reuben Lim. Competition training is led by Master Chelsea Sim for poomsae.

Four is the early end of what we recommend. At that age it is coordination and listening, not technique.
Three years of coloured belts and gradings later: 1st Poom, the junior equivalent of a 1st Dan black belt.
Every poom grade has a minimum waiting period, so there is no shortcut — 4th Poom is years of continuous training. See the full belt order.
In 2026 Isaac travelled with our squad to train with the Long Shan Taekwondo Team in Taiwan — different coaches, different training partners, a different standard to measure against.
Isaac secured Direct School Admission (DSA) into NUS High School of Mathematics and Science — though not through taekwondo. He was selected on another track entirely.
We mention it because the worry we hear most from parents of upper-primary children is that training has to stop once the academic pressure arrives. Isaac reached 4th Poom and kept competing straight through a selective DSA application and the PSLE year behind it. The focus and discipline carry into the classroom.
Isaac is one student. Here is what other parents say on Google.
Poom ranks are the junior equivalent of dan ranks, for students under 15. 4th Poom is the highest there is, needing a minimum of three years at 3rd Poom, so very few juniors reach it. More in our poom belt guide.
Three years — he started at four and earned his 1st Poom at seven. That is typical for a child who trains consistently, and time-in-grade rules mean it cannot be rushed much faster.
No — he was selected on a non-taekwondo track. We mention it only to show that serious training and a demanding academic load can coexist. For the sport route, see our DSA taekwondo guide.
